Mandate of the Department:
In 1964, an important policy decision was taken to the effect that the structure of the Secondary School system should be of 10 years duration instead of 11 years, and it should be followed by two years Intermediate Education in place of the existing Higher Secondary and Multipurpose system.

In Telangana State there are 404 Government Junior Colleges including 4 Government Vocational Junior colleges under the administrative control of the Commissioner of Intermediate Education and 41 Private Aided Junior Colleges. The Grant-in-aid of Aided Colleges, service conditions, academic matter, administration and control over Government Junior Colleges, taking necessary measures for improvement of academic performance and infrastructure facilities in public funded institutions are being looked after by Commissionerate of Intermediate Education.

There is one Regional Joint Director of Intermediate Education offices at regional level and Joint Director in O/o CIE, TS, Hyderabad Looking after Service Matters of Hyderabad Cadre, also 7 District Vocational Education officers at district level started functioning during the year 1999-2000. Now after formation of 31 New Districts there are 18 District Intermediate Education Offices functioning in the state. The offices of Regional Joint Director of Intermediate Education are located at Hyderabad and Warangal.

At +2 stage of Education, conventional courses in Science, Arts and Commerce are offered and 30 Vocational courses in 404 Junior colleges in the field of Engineering & Technology, Agriculture, Home Science, Para-medical, Business & Commerce and Humanities.

The Department of Intermediate education caters to the needs of students studying Intermediate and aims at maintaining the Standards and Quality of Education.

  • There are 404 Government Junior Colleges and 41 Private Aided Junior Colleges under the control of the department.
  • A total of 1,67,752 students have enrolled in Government Junior College during the year 2017-18, out of which 91,578 are studying in Ist year and 76,174 are in II year course.
  • 13,480 Students are studying in Private Aided Junior Colleges.
  • The Department has introduced free education policy for Intermediate level students studying in the Government Junior Colleges since 2015-16.
  • Government has also taken a policy decision of Supply of free Text Books to all the students studying in the Government Junior Colleges since 2015-16. Accordingly during the year 2017-18 Free Text Books were supplied to 1,67,752 Students Studying in the Government Junior Colleges.
  • There are a total of 6719 sanctioned Junior Lecturer’s posts in GJCs & Aided Junior Colleges, out of which 1040 are working & 5679 are vacant.
  • 3728 contract faculty & 162 Minimum Time Scale are working against sanctioned posts.
